The building will provide stylish, state-of-the-art meeting rooms and networking spaces in support of interdisciplinary collaborative activities and training events.

Complementing the undergraduate provision in the Laidlaw Library, and the dedicated provision for postgraduates in some faculties, the new EBL will focus its facilities and services on stimulating and supporting research and collaborative working at all levels within the University and beyond. Individuals and groups across all disciplinary backgrounds will be attracted by the quality of its technical services infrastructure and the style, comfort and usability of its spaces.

In September 2015, one half of the EBL re-opened for use providing 1,000 study seats and full access to science and engineering texts. Building works will be carried out in the remaining half during the year. In summer 2016 the situation will be reversed; the newly-refurbished half of the building will open in the autumn term, and the rest of the project completed during the 2016-17 academic year.

Key stages:

  • Phase 1: Works now complete. Library is partially open for all users.Friday 5 June, the Library will fully close for the summer.
  • Phase 2: Between September 2015 and Summer 2016 refurbishment work will take place to main part of the building whilst the library operates from the newer south extension part of the building.
During summer 2016 the library will close for the summer vacation. It will re-open in autumn 2016 with refurbished areas accessible for all users.
  • Phase 3: From autumn 2016 to early 2017 the other half of the building will be completed.

Disruption

Building work will be ongoing and there may be noisy periods.  An information screen has been installed in the library which will highlight any specific disruption.
